Chargeable weight vs gross weight
For air shipments, the freight cost is based on chargeable weight — whichever is greater of the actual gross weight or the volumetric (dimensional) weight. Light, bulky cartons can cost far more than their scale weight suggests.

The formula
Volumetric weight = length × width × height (cm) ÷ 6000. If that exceeds the gross weight in kilos, the carrier bills the volumetric figure. Express couriers sometimes use ÷ 5000, so always confirm the divisor. Let the volume calculator do it for you, and compare modes in Sea vs. air before booking.
